Crewel Work Embroidery Kit

The embroidery kit includes all materials needed to complete the embroidery.

The embroidery design measures 23cm x 20cm wide.

Garden Song is an elegant crewel embroidery panel inspired by the traditional Jacobean-style Tree of Life, featuring stylised flowers and foliage.

An exotic, jewel-toned bird rests in the tree; its feathers are stitched using a variety of embroidery stitches that mimic real feather texture, in shades of teal, moss green, and olive, accented with a pale blue crest and golden collar.

Surrounding the bird, an array of fantastical flowers blooms on the meandering stems. Foliage, embroidered in a mix of mostly common stitches in shades of green and soft teal blue, adds pattern and texture to the design.

Garden Song is stitched using 15 shades of Au ver a Soie fine crewel wool in a palette of soft golden yellow, sage greens, teal blues, and soft blue-grey. The embroidery design is printed on a generous piece of light taupe linen twill, ready for you to stitch.

This project is perfect in size for a practical tote or shoulder bag, which is what I did with mine. It will also look amazing as a cushion, a framed piece for your wall, or a fabulous cover for a footstool or fire screen.

** Intermediate **

Garden Song is stitched with fine crewel wool, using a wide variety of embroidery stitches. I recommend you have some experience with hand embroidery and be comfortable with common embroidery stitches.

The Story Behind This Design:

Garden Song was designed as a course project for an embroidery retreat in Potsdam, Germany. One of Potsdam's main attractions is the beautiful Sanssouci Palace and gardens, and I wanted to create a design that suitably echoed the splendour of the place. In front of the palace is a series of terraced gardens with espaliered fruit trees and vines, which inspired the tree design. The bird and colour palette are a nod to the flower beds in the gardens and the rich ornamentation in the palaces.

Garden Song became one of two designs in the set. The second, By the Pond, is embroidered in stranded silk. It features the same bird, flowers, and foliage, arranged in a floral border along the edge of a pond.
