Silk Embroidery Kit

The embroidery kit includes all materials needed to complete the embroidery design.

The embroidery design measures 16cm x 22cm wide.

By the Pond is a tranquil, nature-inspired silk embroidery panel, featuring a stylised floral border framed by a soft sage and metallic gold zig-zag border.

An exotic long-tailed bird perches on a curling vine, its plumage richly detailed in teal, golden yellow, cream, and copper brown using a variety of embroidery stitches that mimic real feathers.

Surrounding the bird, a row of soft golden chinoiserie-style flowers blooms across the design, and foliage in shades of green and soft teal blue adds pattern and texture through the clever use of different stitches.

Below the flower border, graceful arched terraces in soft green span a shimmering pond, its water suggested by wavy stitches in blue, teal, and glittering metallic gold.

By the Pond is stitched with 15 shades of stranded Au ver a Soie silk threads, in a palette of soft golden yellow, sage greens, teal blues, and soft blue-grey with accents of metallic gold. The embroidery design is printed on a generous piece of natural linen/cottone fabric, ready for you to stitch.

The By the Pond panel is perfect for a pretty purse or small bag, or for setting into a box lid, which is what I did with mine. It will also look amazing as a cushion, a framed piece for your wall, or a fabulous cover for a book or diary perhaps.

** Intermediate **

By the Pond is stitched in stranded silk, using a wide variety of embroidery stitches. I recommend you have some experience with hand embroidery and be comfortable with common embroidery stitches.

The Story Behind This Design:

By the Pond was designed as a course project for an embroidery retreat in Potsdam, Germany. One of Potsdam's main attractions is the beautiful Sanssouci Palace and gardens, and I wanted to create a design that suitably echoed the splendour of the place. In front of the palace is a large fountain pond, and a series of terraced gardens leads up to the summer palace at the top. The formal garden around the fountain has the most exquisite borders with rambling flowers that inspired this border design. The exotic bird references the opulent ornamentation in the palace.

By the Pond became one of two designs in the set I refer to at Take Two. The second, Garden Song, is a traditional Tree of Life design embroidered in fine crewel wool. It is designed with the same bird, flowers and foliage but arranged in a floral border along the edge of a pond
